Hundreds turned out to Malvern Hills Pool Saturday, July 2 for an unexpected but much-welcomed opening after the city of Asheville previously said the pool would not open at all this summer.

Back in May, city of Asheville officials announced the pool would have a delayed opening after an inspection found a broken part in the operating system.

On June 17, Buncombe County Environmental Health identified a drain cover that had come out of compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act (VGB). VGB-approved drain covers would generally be available, but manufacturers are experiencing supply chain delays. City officials then said the required materials would not be available in time to open Malvern Hills Pool this year.

“The Virginia Graeme Baker Act that was signed into law back in 2007 has recently been updated in 2021,” said D. Tyrell McGirt, city of Asheville director of Parks and Recreation D. Tyrell McGirt. “So, it sounds like a lot of pools were able to get through last year, but this year the health department is being more particular and focused in on those new regulations. And we’re finding out now that we don’t meet those configurations."

“We were really disappointed [about the news],” said Zoe Trout, of Asheville. “This kind of like the neighborhood pool, so it’s always really fun to see folks here and just jump in the water when it’s hot.”

However, on Friday it was announced the pool would open for the season after Asheville officials said the manufacturer was able to provide updated documentation that showed the drain covers at Malvern Hills Pool are in line with safety rules.

“It’s a wonderful blessing,” said Ratisha Shivers, while at the pool. “It’s such a great community asset for the kids to get out and have a great time.”

When officials first announced the pool would be closed, backlash was swift across social media with many upset residents.

“We’re just really glad the city was able to get it together and open it up for everybody,” said Laura Ruby of Asheville.

The pool is expected to start normal operating hours next week.

Normal hours of operation:

  • Monday – Friday : Noon – 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1-6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1-6 p.m.

Admission for the pool is $3 per person or $100 for a season pass per person.
