Heavy winds take down trees and power lines, closing major roads and taking out telephone lines Wednesday morning.

A stretch of highway 70 in Swannanoa was blocked near ArtSpace Charter School after high winds damaged a utility pole, impacting telephone lines. Just after 5:30 a.m. authorities confirmed they have been able to reopen the road but crews remain on scene working to repair damage to the utility pole and telephone lines.

Also, in Buncombe County, high winds took down a tree on Tunnel Road near the VA Hospital in Asheville. Crews say that road was reopened just before 6 a.m.

A wind advisory is in effect for a good portion of Western North Carolina through 7 am. Gusts over 40 mph are possible, stronger in the higher elevations. Downed trees and power lines are possible. Residents are being reminded to drive cautiously, especially in high profile vehicles.
