Suspects located after detonated device forces evacuation of Hendersonville UPS Store

UPDATE: Two individuals have been identified, and one charged after a HAZMAT situation forced UPS Store employees to evacuate Friday morning.

A spokesperson with the city of Hendersonville clarified that shortly after 11 a.m. on March 27 two men walked into The UPS Store on Spartanburg Highway in Hendersonville.

Following an exchange with UPS Store associates, one of the individuals set down an unknown object that he physically activated that dispersed an unknown, small amount of white powder.

The building was evacuated, and police and fire personnel responded to the scene.

No injuries were reported. The NC Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team 6 is investigating to determine the makeup of the powder.

The Hendersonville Police Department has identified and located both individuals.

Through their investigation, detectives have charged Christopher Murray, 38, of Hendersonville, with felony perpetrating a hoax 14-69.2 (a). Murray was taken into custody without incident and is being held in the Henderson County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing and further charges are pending.

No other details were released about the other individual identified.

"It’s fair to say we have some sort of criminal intent and we will be pursuing charges," Chief Herbert Blake of the Hendersonville Police Department said, describing what charges may come upon further investigation.

The Hendersonville Police Department is currently investigating the incident and seeking the identities of the two persons of interest featured in the surveillance photos. Anyone with any information on the incident is asked to contact Detective Malinda Durner with the Hendersonville Police Department at (828) 697-3046. The public may also submit anonymous tips through the Hendersonville Police Department app which can be downloaded in the Apple App Store for iOS devices or Google Play for Android devices.
