A North Carolina State Park is expected to be closed all week while emergency crews work to contain a forest fire. As of Monday afternoon, the fire was reportedly over 500 acres with crews frantically working to contain it.

Surry County residents reported seeing smoke in the area soon after the Mount Airy Christmas parade Saturday night. By Noon on Sunday, the fire in Pilot Mountain State Park had burned an estimated 200 acres.

NEARLY 180 ACRES BURNED IN PILOT MOUNTAIN FOREST FIRE; STATE PARK CLOSED AT THIS TIME

North Carolina Forest Service officials told News 13 on Monday afternoon that the fire was caused by people, but the exact cause is still unknown. Officials say the fire is "not contained" but "within containment lines."

As of Sunday morning, officials said there were more than 30 firefighters on the mountain being aided with air support from helicopters in the area. However, officials warn, dry conditions, strong wind gusts and dry leaves on the ground are making the fight harder.

The forest service is asking the public to avoid the area and they’re asking residents not to fly personal drones in the vicinity of the fire. There is a temporary flight restriction in place for a five-mile radius of the area.

Officials say it will likely take several days to contain the fire.

COLD START TO THE WORKWEEK WITH AN ELEVATED FIRE DANGER RISK

Pilot Mountain Mayor Evan J. Cockerham said on social media Sunday that Governor Roy Cooper has been briefed on the situation.

There is a ban on outdoor burning in Surry and surrounding counties at this time. Anyone who sees someone burning leaves or with an open fire is asked to contact local law enforcement.

Donations are being taken for firefighters. After a "tremendous" amount of support from the community, the Town of Pilot Mountain says fire officials are asking for monetary donations. Donations will be going to both the Pilot Knob Vol. Fire Department and Pilot Mountain Rescue and EMS. Monetary Donations can be made in person at Town Hall with cash, check, or card. By phone with card at 336-368-2247 ext 0, or online at www.pilotmountainnc.org.

Officials say, so far, no homes or businesses have been impacted.

Located in Surry and Yadkin counties 20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem, Pilot Mountain State Park centers around the iconic geologic knob that serves as a beacon to the surrounding Piedmont. Two of North Carolina's state trails traverse the park: the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, as well as the Yadkin River paddle trail.
