Those in the higher elevations woke Tuesday morning to find a fairly thick blanket of snow.

TUESDAY WEATHER UPDATE: SNOW IS FALLING ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS, EXTREME COLD A CONCERN

Right over the dividing line of Yancey and Madison County, News 13 crews found a landscape of trees and greenery covered in several inches of snow.

Not far from Laurel Valley Baptist Church, along Watershed Road, the snow-covered the road making travel dangerous. NCDOT crews started their process on primary roads overnight, those secondary roads will be worked on next.

At this point, most secondary roads have not been treated yet in most western counties.

“Crews are out, have been out and will continue to clear the interstate and primaries which should be getting in fairly decent shape and then moving to secondary roads to clear those,” Yancey and Madison County NCDOT Engineer Gabe Johnson told News 13.

Gabe says his crews, covering Madison and Yancey plan to begin clearing second priority roads Tuesday afternoon.

While snow totals exceeded DOT expectations in high elevations, temperatures have been above freezing so the ice has not been a major concern. Still, the threat of black ice is a big concern later in the evening.
