Cherokee reports first COVID-19 death; masks required started Friday

The EBCI Public Health & Human Services Division and Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority have confirmed the first COVID-19 death for a tribal citizen.

Principal Chief Richard Sneed announced the death on Facebook, along with a new executive order.

Sneed says until further notice, masks should be worn in public spaces on the Qualla Boundary.

An Executive Order requiring that masks be worn in public spaces on the Qualla Boundary officially goes into effect at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2020.

Additionally, PHHS and CIHA have reported three new positive cases, bringing the total positive cases to 59.
