Body found near Swannanoa River in Asheville

Asheville police are investigating after a body was found Friday afternoon near the Swannanoa River.

Authorities said a passerby discovered the body near 139 Meadow Road, and notified police a little after 2 p.m.

Until an autopsy has been performed and a cause of death determined, police are treating it as a suspicious death; however, authorities say the initial investigation found no signs of foul play.

EMS and the North Carolina Hazardous Material Regional Response Team are on the scene.

One lane of Meadow Road is closed. Expect delays in the area.

Police have released an official statement:

Asheville Police Investigate Body Found on Meadow Road
(ASHEVILLE, N.C. - August 23, 2019) - Asheville Police Department (APD) responded to a call at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon regarding a deceased person that was discovered by a passerby at 139 Meadow Road. APD has not yet identified the person and is working to determine the cause of death. The initial investigation shows no signs of foul play.
