Extreme amounts of rain over the weekend resulted in a sanitary sewer to overflow, leaking approximately 20,000 gallons of water into a Hendersonville creek.

The city issued a notice explaining the incident that took place on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2020.

Around 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, the city's Wastewater Collection System experienced a discharge of untreated wastewater from a manhole near Pinehurst Drive. The city said the overflow of approximately 20,000 gallons, due to excessive rainfall, spilled out into Clear Creek in the French Broad River Basin.

The notice said the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Division of Water Resources (DWR) was notified of the event on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020. The division will be reviewing the matter.
