Wildfires scorching parts of Canada are having impacts as far down south in the United States as the Carolinas now.

Smoke from the wildfires burning in Nova Scotia will continue to impact the Carolinas at least through Sunday morning.

An Air Quality Alert is in effect for elevations above 4,000 feet in Western North Carolina until 7 a.m. Sunday morning, June 4. All of Upstate South Carolina is under the alert until 8 p.m. Saturday evening, June 3.

Air Quality Alerts are issued when ground level ozone approaches or exceeds unhealthy levels. People with breathing issues are urged to limit time outside during Air Quality Alerts.

According to The Associated Press, these have been the largest wildfires ever recorded in Canada's Atlantic Coast province of Nova Scotia, prompting thousands of evacuations.
