GREENSBORO — When Michael Parrish voted at the Craft Recreation Center on Wednesday morning, he was confident in his selection for U.S. Senate.
But when Parrish reviewed his choices on the ballot before pressing the “vote” button, he was surprised to see Thom Tillis as the selection for U.S. Senate.
“I thought maybe I pressed it by mistake so I cleared it out and hit Kay Hagan,” Parrish said. “It said Thom Tillis again.”
He called over a poll worker and a supervisor, who watched him vote, with the same result.
“I’m 61 years old, I’ve been voting since I was 18, and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Parrish said.
All the other votes on his ballot were correct, he said.
Parrish was moved to another voting machine, which properly recorded his vote.

Parrish was one of the first voters at the center on Yanceyville Road.
Guilford County Elections Director Charlie Collicutt said.
After Parrish’s problem, a precinct supervisor recalibrated the malfunctioning machine.
There have been no problems with the machine since the recalibration, Collicutt said.
Voters at the Craft Center — and all early voting locations — are being told that if there is any issue
before they press the “vote” button on the machine to bring it to the attention of a precinct official, Collicutt said.
Wednesday’s incident is the only one that he is aware of so far during early voting, but there could be others that have not been reported to him, he said, and the precincts should be documenting them.
