ADMINISTRATION

  McDowell County Health Department is a public, non-profit agency supported by federal, state, local tax dollars and fee-for service revenues. Our goal is to promote, maintain and protect the health of the public.
  A variety of services, including screening, diagnosis and treatment of health problems and conditions, preventitive services, and community health services are available. Our team provides quality health services to the citizens of McDowell County.

PUBLIC HEALTH NURSING  

FAMILY PLANNING AND BIRTH CONTROL

  This scheduled service is to help people decide the number and spacing of children. The doctor and clinic staff assess, counsel, educate, refer and follow-up all patients as needed. (by appointment)

ADULT HEALTH

  The Adult Health Clinic is for women 18 years of age or older who do not require a birth control method. The nurse staffed clinics include a yearly PAP smear, breast, mouth and skin exams as well as lab tests on a scheduled basis. (by appointment)

MATERNAL HEALTH

  Clinic services are provided on a scheduled basis. The clinic staff assess, counsel, educate, refer, and follow-up all patients. Instructions are given regarding maternity care and nutritional needs. The doctor staffed clinics provide high quality maternity care for those persons financially eligible.

                                      BABY LOVE
                                   (Maternity Care Coordination)

  This service is offered during your pregnancy and continues for two months after you have your baby. Baby Love nurses give you emotional support and help you find other services in your area such as transportation, housing, education and social services that you may need. Our goal is for you and your baby to be happy and healthy.

POST PARTUM HOME VISIT

  Maternity patients are offered this special service for moms and their babies. A nurse may visit your home shortly after your baby is born. The nurse will check you, weigh your baby, check for health problems, share information and counsel any concerns you may be having as a new parent.

INFANT AND CHILD HEALTH 
The following services are available for infants and children:

Nurse Screening
    This clinic promotes proper growth and development for eligible infants and children up to age 21. A physical exam, immunizations, health education, counseling and referrals are performed by the nursing staff.

Pediatric
    This clinic is for eligible infants under 12 months old who have not had a well baby check-up or who have been referred. This doctor or nurse staffed clinic is provided on a scheduled basis. Immunizations, health education, counseling, refferal and follow-up are performed. (by appointment)

Child Service Coordination
    This free program is for children, birth to age five, to help get the best possible care during the first years of life. This nurse staffed program can help find services that children and families may need. To get more information about the program, please call the health department.

SIDS
(Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)

  SIDS is a medical term that describes the sudden death of an infant which remains unexplained after all known and possible causes have been successfully ruled out through autopsy, death scene investigation and reviewing the medical history. A nurse provides counseling and support to families who have lost a child due to SIDS. Please call the health department for more information.

SCHOOL HEALTH  

  The nursing staff screen, counsel, educate, refer and follow-up school age children who have been identified in need.

STD's
(Sexually Transmitted Diseases)

The health department works to prevent STD's. Counseling, testing and health education is provided for HIV / AIDS, Gonnorhea, Syphilis, and other STD's. Treatment is provided free of charge for certain STD's. Patients can be seen Monday-Friday by the nursing staff on a walk in basis.

TB (Tuberculosis) & CHEST X-RAY

  TB skin test and TB chest x-ray are offered on a scheduled basis. Medication for TB is provided as needed.

HOME HEALTH

  Home health care is for people in need of skilled care and are under a doctors care. Medicare and Medicaide patients must be confined to home due to illness or injury. Patient care is provided by a team of home health professionals that are registered, licensed or certified by the state. Our agency is accredited by Joint Commission. IMMUNIZATIONS & GENERAL CLINICS

  Immunizations are available Monday-Friday on a walk in basis. Scheduled clinics are held on Tuesday. No appointment necessary. There is no charge for childhood immunizations (DPT/HIB, Polio, MMR, Hepatitis B, etc.) Adult immunizations are also available. Immunizations for foreign travel are available on a referral basis.
Diabetes and blood pressure screening
Monitoring of blood pressure as prescribed by a doctor
Administration of injections as approved by a doctor
Blood tests(Syphylis, sickle cell, lead, etc.)
Pregnancy testing
Vision and hearing screening
Communicable disease detection and treatment
School health funds eligibility

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

  This service protects the public from potential health hazards by being responsible for the following:
Food, Lodging and Institutions
    Sanitary inspections of restaurants, lodging establishments, food and drink stands, meat markets, institutions, schools and school cafeterias, local confinement facilities, residential care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes and public swimming pools.
Water Supplies
    Collection of water samples from private water supplies for bacterial, chemical, pesticides and petroleum contamination analysis.
On Site Waste Disposal
    Inspection of all newly installed private and limited commercial sewage disposal systems (septic tanks and privies). Supervision of repair and modifications of existing sewage systems.

VITAL STATISTICS

  The health department is responsible for the complete, accurate and timely registration of all births and deaths, as well as issuance of required permits in our registration district. The health department registrar maintains required records and is familiar with the vital statistics laws, and with all rules, regulations and instructions issued by the state registrar and the chief medical examiner.

PUBLIC DENTAL HEALTH

  Public Health Dental Hygienists work to promote good dental health through education and preventitive programs offered to people of all ages. Other services include screening, referral and follow-up for school age children. Limited funds may be available through the health department to help eligible children get dental care.

 WIC  

  WIC is a Food and Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.
WIC is for:
Pregnant women
Breastfeeding women who have had a baby in the last 12 months
Women who have had a baby in the last 6 months
Infants
Children to age 5
