DNS Settings for Windows 2000 or Windows XP

We suggest that you print this page out if possible so that you can have the instructions in front of you as you make the change. Click here for a printer friendly version of this document.

1. Click Start and right-click Internet Explorer, then Internet Properties. (In Windows 2000, use Start-Settings-Control Panel and double-click Internet Options instead.)

2. Click Connections (a tab at the top).

3. Click "MAIN" (or whatever you called your connection to MAIN when you created it).

4. Now click the "Settings" button (to the right of "MAIN").

5. Click Properties (to the right of the username).

6. Click the Networking tab, then make sure that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is highlighted in the lower window; click Properties below the window where that appears.

7. Click the button marked "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

8. Click Advanced. Leave both check marks on this page turned on.

9. Click WINS at the top of that screen, and turn "Enable LMHosts" off (uncheck it by clicking it if it's checked.)

10. Select "Enable NetBIOS" if that appears below the LMHosts entry (Windows XP only.)

11. Click Okay on each screen until you are back to your Desktop, and close the Control Panel if necessary. You've just successfully changed your DNS settings!

NOTE: A small percentage of systems will have inexplicable troubles after doing this, and there is an alternate setup that will fix those situations. IF YOU MAKE THIS CHANGE and the system malfunctions when loading pages in the browser window, repeat steps 1-6 and proceed below.

7. Make sure "Use the following DNS servers" is selected, and type in these numbers in the locations \ indicated:

Preferred DNS Server: 10.100.100.100
Alternate DNS Server: 209.192.109.135

8. Click Okay on each screen until you are back to your Desktop, and close the Control Panel if necessary. You've just successfully changed your DNS settings!
