Setup Instructions for Mac OS 8.0, 8.1 and 8.5

  1. Open the hard drive: locate and open the file named Internet
  2. Open the Internet Setup Assistant
  3. "Would you like to set up your Mac to use the Internet?" – select Yes
  4. "Do you already have an Internet account?"Yes
  5. Follow the instructions as prompted. Click the right arrow to continue.
  6. Configuration name and connection type – you may call this configuration "MAIN" and select Modem. Click the right arrow to continue.
  7. Modem Settings – Select your modem and port. "Does your phone line use tone or pulse?" - make sure Tone is selected. Make sure "Ignore Dial Tone" is not checked. Click the right arrow to continue.
  8. Configuration Information – Enter the phone number, your Account Name and password numbers from your User Account Reference Sheet in this window. Click the right arrow to continue.
  9. PPP Connect Scripts – Select No. Click the right arrow to continue.
  10. IP Address – Select No. Click the right arrow to continue.
  11. Domain Name Servers – Type in the DNS numbers from your User Account Reference Sheet. Enter the numbers on separate lines as follows: (These are example numbers only:)

    Click the right arrow to continue.

  13. E-mail address and password- Enter your user name and password in the appropriate dialog boxes. The "quoting character" box is optional. Click the right arrow to continue.
  14. E-mail account and host computer – Enter the information from your User Account Reference Sheet – email address is in the format: username@yourcounty.main.nc.us. For email host computer, the listing on your User Account Reference Sheet is POP3/SMTP mail server name. It is in the format: yourcounty.main.nc.us Click the right arrow to continue.
  15. Newsgroup Host Computer – Type in "fullnews.main.nc.us." Click the right arrow to continue.
  16. "Do you use proxy servers for Internet connections?" Select No. Click the right arrow to continue.
  17. Congratulations! You are ready to access the Internet via MAIN, your community network.
