CHILDHOOD SWEETHEARTS MARRY - FORTY-ONE YEARS LATER

Eulas Cook and Lucille Brackett grew up together in the Long Creek section of Graham County during the late 1940's and early 1950's. For a time they lived next door to each other. They became childhood sweethearts and later began to date. Their last date was in 1953. Eulas left to serve in the U.S. Army and Lucille married D.W. Burchfield and moved to Florida. It would be another forty-one years before they saw one another again. Eulas moved to Gastonia some time after serving his time in the U.S Army and has lived there the past thirty years or so.

In 1994, Eulas was in Graham County and visited Lucille's mother and brother Lula and Ray Brackett. He asked about Lucille and learned that she was now a widow and had been living less than twenty miles from his home in Gastonia in High shoals and had been there the past seventeen years. Eulas obtained Lucille's phone number from them and called her. Arrangements were made for her to meet him at his place of employment, the Wix Corporation where Eulas is a security guard. When Lucille drove up to the guard station, a security guard stepped out and approached her vehicle. Lucille said "I need to see Eulas Cook." The guard replied "You are looking at him." Lucille did not even recognize him.

Eulas and Lucille were married on April 20 of this year. They make their home in Gastonia, but regularly visit in Graham County. Plans after Eulas retires include getting a travel trailer and doing some touring and probably spending more time in Graham County.
