Cheoah Trail at Cheoah District
Ranger Headquarters

Deerhead ProfileDirections: The Cheoah Trail is located about 2.7 miles from Robbinsville. From Robbinsville, take Highway 129 North for 1½ miles to the junction with Highway 143 West (Massey Branch Road). Turn left and proceed West on Highway 143 for approximately 1¼ miles to the Cheoah District Ranger Headquarters of the United States Forest Service. Turn left into the Ranger Headquarters and park in the visitors parking lot. There are picnic tables and restrooms. Be sure to visit the Ranger's Office during business hours. They have a large selection of information bulletins and an excellent selection of books on nature studies.

  • Trailhead: The trailhead is located adjacent to the parking lot.
  • Distance: This is a 2.3 mile loop trail above Lake Santeetlah.
  • Difficulty: It is rated as an easy hiking trail with steps built into the trail.
  • Use Guide: Cheoah Trail is recommended for novices or families with small children. With a group at a casual pace, allow 1-2 hours. Bring water and protective clothing if your trip is going to be more than a few hours.
  • Description: Follow the trail markers on the Forest Service road and the footpaths to complete the loop. Depending on the season there are some excellent views of Lake Santeetlah. The trail has information plaques posted at various intervals that explain how the various timber stands are managed.
