PETITION TO SAVE LOCAL HISTORIC LANDMARK

I request and will support action by the Asheville Historic Resources Commission and the Asheville City Council to designate the Sayles Bleachery buildings and site at 437 Swannanoa River Road as a "local historic landmark". Such designation would validate the position that the highest and best use of the property should reflect its historic heritage (textile industry), its unique environmental setting (on the Swannanoa River), and its multi-neighborhood proximity. Currently, the site is being proposed for development of a 220,000-square-foot Super Wal-Mart.
