Building Bridges; Dismantling Racism, Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville

15 Jan 2017

January 15, 2017: “Building Bridges; Dismantling Racism”

2:00 PM at Asheville Friends Meeting House
227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC

Presented by Building Bridges Co-Facilitators

The mission of Building Bridges is to dismantle racism by fostering relationships that respect diversity, seek understanding and encourage action.

Several co-facilitators will discuss the role of Building Bridges in the community and how educational programming, paired with a safe place to learn, reflect and discuss, has made a profound impact on people and institutions throughout Western North Carolina.

Since 1993, more than 1500 participants have attended the program. Several comments from former participants reveal its effect.

“Participating in dialogue is, in my opinion, the most important first step in dismantling racism and building community.”

"True healing and understanding can only come from authentic dialogue and the sharing of each other's life experiences."

“In order to dismantle racism, we must first name it and work collectively as a humanity to address systems of oppression. Building Bridges provides a unique platform for dialogue and understanding towards healing.”

"I believe that Building Bridges is a stepping stone to building great relationships that will foster healing in our community."

"Building Bridges has given me an opportunity to feel part of the Asheville community and its ongoing efforts to improve race relations."

Danae Jones Aicher is a mass communications professional with more than 20 years of experience in news, politics and public relations. While her degree in History and extensive career in public and mass communication gave her an upfront view of how we perpetuate the problem of race in America, it was her “new career” as a mother that compelled her to begin working to overcome racism.

Danae serves on the Board of Building Bridges of Asheville, an organization committed to eliminating racism locally. She also serves on the national Board of Mocha Moms, Inc., the country’s premiere voice for mothers of color.

Informal discussion and refreshments will follow the presentation. All are welcome!

The Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville is a non-theist alternative to traditional religion, a member of the American Ethical Union and an affiliate of the American Humanist Association. We endeavor to nurture the capacity and responsibility of human beings to act in their personal relationships and in the larger community to help create a better world. We are inspired by the ideal of working to create a more humane society, recognizing each person’s worth and dignity, and helping to bring out the best in him or her. We join together to assist each other in developing ethical ideas and ideals, to celebrate life’s joys, support each other through life’s crises, and to cultivate ethical behavior in our community.
