Carolina Mountains Literary Festival

9 Sep 2016 - 10 Sep 2016

Burnsville, NC - As part of the North Carolina Humanities Council Pulitzer Initiative, the Carolina Mountains Literary festival welcomes David George Haskell, Pulitzer Prize finalist for his book The Forest Unseen. The annual festival is held in Burnsville September 8-10, 2016.

Haskell’s appearance is made possible by The North Carolina Humanities Council as part of Pulitzer NC: The Power of Words, a program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Prizes in 2016 through Pulitzer’s Campfires Initiative.

Journey Out Journey In is the theme for this year’s festival and covers stories of road trips and walks, journeys to self-discovery and identity, drawing from the literary wealth of our region.

Festival director Kathy Weisfeld says, “All of this year’s authors take a journey. For example, David George Haskell journeyed most days to a square meter of old growth forest to search the layers to understand the nature of us all.“

In addition to Haskell’s Saturday night keynote, North Carolina’s former Poet Laureate (1997-2002) Fred Chappell will be giving the Friday night banquet talk. Chappell’s literary awards include the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry, the Prix de Meilleur des Livres Etrangers, the Bollingen Prize, and the T. S. Eliot Prize.

Over 25 authors — 10 from the Asheville area — will give free readings and discussions as well four ticketed workshops. The Festival begins Thursday night with a free concert and presentation of “Wayfaring Strangers: Musical Journey from Scotland and Ulster to Appalachia” with musicians and authors Doug and Darcy Orr. Joining them via audiotape from her home in Scotland is Fiona Ritchie, co-author and host of NPR’s “Thistle and Shamrock."

Carolina Mountains Literary Festival, Burnsville, NC is on September 810, 2016. The weekend includes four ticketed events: four ticketed writing workshops ($30), the Friday night banquet ($35) and Saturday’s keynote ($20). For a complete list of authors and events go to http://cmlitfest.org.
