Smart Growth Issues Facing AVL & WNC

Lenoir-Rhyne University Asheville welcomes Governor Parris Glendening, President of Smart Growth America’s Leadership Institute, to address students, faculty, elected officials, and the public on smart growth issues facing Asheville and Western North Carolina on Monday, April 4th at 5:30pm.
Glendening will address local, regional and national issues and consider many of the challenges Asheville currently faces around affordable housing, downtown development, transportation, highways, and general livability.
Parris Glendening served as Governor of the State of Maryland from 1995-2003 where he created the nation’s first state-level smart growth policy package. He taught political science at the University of Maryland, College Park for 27 years and is the author of two books and over 100 articles and conference papers. He travels across the country and around the world advising state and local governments on smart growth, transit, and sustainability policies and practices. He also serves as President of the Governors Institute on Community Design, a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative, administered in partnership with the US EPA and Smart Growth America.
Socializing starts at 5:30, and Gov. Glendening's talk will begin at 6:00pm in the Lenoir-Rhyne University Board Room on the 2nd floor of 36 Montford Ave.
