The Promise of Humanism

17 Apr 2016

“The Promise of Humanism” will be presented by Fred Edwords at the Sunday, April 17th meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, 2:00-3:30 PM, at Asheville Friends Meeting House, 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC. All are welcome to attend.

Every religion has a promise it offers to adherents. But what is the promise of humanism? What is its attraction? Emerging in the early twentieth century, humanism struck a chord because it, too, answered a need. It offered a refreshing outlook with a this-worldly forthrightness and down-to-earth honesty. It cleared the air, liberated the mind, and motivated social action. And this humanist experience continues today to uplift and inspire growing numbers. Join us as we immerse ourselves in that experience and enjoy the inspiration it can bring.

Informal discussion and refreshments will follow the presentation.

Fred Edwords began his humanist activism in 1977. He has lectured throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and India, appeared on national television, and written for several publications. He was executive director for the American Humanist Association and national director of the United Coalition of Reason. He was the first president of Camp Quest, a summer camp for freethinking children. He served on the board of the International Humanist and Ethical Union and the founding board of the National Center for Science Education. Edwords was recognized in the mid-1980s as Rationalist of the Year by the American Rationalist Federation and as a Humanist Pioneer by the American Humanist Association.

Edwords is currently director of planned giving for the Humanist Foundation of the American Humanist Association, an advisor to the Secular Student Alliance, and a humanist celebrant in the Humanist Society. He also sits on the Broader Social Impacts Committee of the Hall of Human Origins at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC.

The Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville is a non-theist alternative to traditional religion. Meeting topics are educational, philosophical and of current interest. EHSA is a member of the American Ethical Union and an affiliate of the American Humanist Association. Members are inspired by the ideal of working to create a more humane society, recognizing each person’s worth and dignity, and helping to bring out the best in him or her.
