Health Disparities in Buncombe County. How Do We Close The Gap?

"Health Disparities in Buncombe County. How Do We Close The Gap?” will be presented by JéWana Grier-McEachin, Executive Director of the Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement (ABIPA) and Sharon Kelly West, Women Veteran’s Program Manager- Charles George VA Medical Center, at the Sunday June 21st meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, 2:00-3:30 PM at The Friends Meeting House located at 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville 28804. Grier-McEachin and West will provide an overview of the history of disparities in Buncombe County and the interventions that have been made to impact community health through community collaborations and programming. The importance of advocacy and community champions will be highlighted.

Grier-McEachin received a B.A. degree in Communications and Business Management from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama. As Executive Director of ABIPA, she leads an organization dedicated to improving the health of African Americans and underserved populations. ABIPA takes a holistic approach to addressing issues of health while focusing on four major areas that impact the ability to establish health parity: physical, mental, economic, and social health.

West is a registered nurse with a Master’s degree in Health Science from Western Carolina University. She completed post graduate studies at Wake Forest University in Clinical Ethics. She is a Jim Bernstein Fellow of Community Leadership and appointed by the NC Speaker of the House of Representatives to the Minority Health Advisory Council.

Following the presentation there will be time for questions and group discussion. Following the meeting, informal conversation and light refreshments will be available. All are welcome!

Jackie is an Ethical Culture Officiant (licensed by the American Ethical Union) and an Humanist Celebrant (licensed by the American Humanist Association) to perform wedding (and other significant life event) ceremonies. Honoraria for Jackie's officiating are direct contributions to the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, a 501(c)(3) organization. Typically Jackie meets twice with the couple being married prior to the rehearsal (if there is one) and works with them to develop a ceremony that is uniquely their own, representing their commitment to each other.
