MTA (McDowell Trails Association) Lake James Triathlon & Duathlon

The 6th Annual MTA Triathlon/Duathlon at Lake James is scheduled for May 16, 2015 at the Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James State Park. The triathlon consists of a 750 meter lake swim, 22 mile ride, and 5K run. The Duathlon option, introduced in 2013 to rave reviews, features a 3.1 mile run, 22 mile ride, and 5K run.
The scenery is breathtaking, with views of Lake James visible from almost everywhere on the course. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to the multisport experience, this is a must-do event. Lake James is North Carolina's State Park of the Year for 2014!

USAT sanctioning and professional event management provided by Glory Hound Events.

Date and Time
The event will be held rain or shine at the Paddy's Creek Section of Lake James State Park on May 16th at 8:00am. On-site registration and packet pickup will be available from 6:00 - 7:30am. The race organizer reserves the right to postpone the event due to severe weather. There is a 3 hour, 30 minute limit for completion of the course.
Day of Race Schedule
5:30pm-7:00pm (Friday night) - Early packet pickup is available at the Lake James State Park office area.
6:00-7:30am - Onsite registration available.
8:00am - Simultaneous Triathlon and Duathlon start!
11:00am - Presentation of awards

Entry Fees
You must be a current USA Triathlon member and present a current USAT membership card at packet-pickup. Those who don't have their card or who are not USAT members, must purchase a one-day membership for $12.

All proceeds benefit the McDowell Trails Association, whose mission is "To partner with any agency, organization, or group of individuals to establish greenways, blueways, and non-motorized trails in McDowell County."

Course Description
All participants must finish the event in under 3 hours, 30 minutes. Race officials reserve the right to remove any participant from the course who it deems unlikely to finish the event within the stated time limit.

• The triathlon swim (750 meters) features a wave start and follows an open water course on Lake James.
• The first duathlon run (3.1 miles), concurrent with the triathlon swim, follows a non-technical trail on state park property with minimal pavement.
• The ride (22 miles) is a well-marked, on-road course consisting of 4 miles on state park property and an 18 mile loop with views of the lake all along the way.
• The run (5K) is mostly on non-technical dirt trail with approximately 1/4 to 1/2 mile of pavement. The triathlon and duathlon share the same final run course.

Awards
• Triathlon and Duathlon awards will be given to the top 3 individual Male & Female, top 3 individual Male & Female Masters, top 3 Male & Female finishers in each age group, and the top Male, Female, and Co-Ed teams.

• Age group awards will be given in the following categories: 19 & under, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & over, plus Athena, Clydesdale, and Master Clydesdale.

• Take exit 90.
• Turn right on Fairview Rd about 2.8 miles to Hwy 70.
• Turn right onto Hwy 70 for .7 miles.
• Turn left onto Hwy 126. Follow 126 about 5.5 miles to Paddy�s Creek Section on right.

• If coming from the west, turn left and cross over I 40, go .5 miles to Hwy 70.
• If coming from the east, turn right, and go about .5 miles to Hwy 70
• Turn left on Hwy 70 go about 2 miles turn right onto Bridgewater. Go 1.2 miles on Bridgewater and turn left onto Benfield Landing . Go about 2 miles. Turn right on Hwy 126, go .7 miles to to park entrance on the right.
