Railroad Days

20 Sep 2014

If you have a soft spot for Chevy Corvettes, Plymouth Challengers, Ford Thunderbirds, and vintage vehicles back to the 1950s, you should be at Mountain Gateway Museum and Old Fort Depot. The Route 70 Cruisers will display some real beautys. The free program, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will celebrate vintage cars and vintage trains as well.

In addition to muscle cars, there will be model trains, a trackless train for kids to enjoy, and a hand pump train car to examine. Local historian Mike Conley will speak on trains in western North Carolina and bring some artifacts.

"Everyone will find something to enjoy at our Railroad Day event," explains staff member Matt Provancha. "Marion Mayor Steve Little will be dressed as a convict and talk about prison labor building railroads. Folklorist and puppeteer Clyde Hollifield will have two storytelling sessions and play dulcimer music. We'll even have North Carolina's first Highway Patrol car on loan from the N.C. Transportation Museum!"

Even more kids' activities and attractions will be available. Food vendors will sell barbecue, hamburgers and hot dogs.It will be a day of family fun to say good-by to summer.
