"The Sexual Politics of Meat Slide Show”
5 Nov 2013
Ecofeminist writer Carol J. Adams, author of “The Sexual Politics of Meat,” will speak and present a slide show on that topic Nov. 5 at Warren Wilson College. Her talk, starting at 7:45 p.m. in Ransom Fellowship Hall behind the College Chapel, is free and open to the public and will include a book signing and vegan reception.
Adams is a renowned writer, feminist and animal-rights advocate, as well as one of the most influential scholars in ecofeminist theory. Her work looks at the connections between oppression of women and animals, examining feminist issues and animal rights. She focuses particularly on gendered representations of animals in advertising and other media and on how these symbolically oppress women. Her website can be found at http://www.caroljadams.com/index.html .
The event is sponsored by Warren Wilson College’s Lyceum Committee, Spiritual Life, Office of the President, Environmental Justice Crew and RISE Project, and by the college’s departments of English, Philosophy, Environmental Studies, Psychology and Sociology/Anthropology.
Adams also is speaking at Appalachian State University Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union’s Parkway Ballroom, and at Western Carolina University Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the theater of A.K. Hinds University Center.
