Stream Volunteers Needed!

29 Sep 2013

Want to help protect WNC’s rivers and streams? Become a SMIE Volunteer Stream Monitor!

Join over 100 local volunteers in this long-running, regional effort run by area non-profits. You will learn to sample streams for water quality, and tell the difference between different kinds of aquatic insects and why they are important for healthy rivers and creeks. Get trained in water quality monitoring methods and assessment for collaborative projects in Haywood, Madison, Buncombe, Yancey and Mitchell Counties.

Workshop is open to anyone (ages 17 and up) with any level of experience. Once trained, volunteers work in small groups with leaders. Sample a minimum of 2 sites, 2 times per year (about 10 hrs per year).

Training Workshop on Sunday, September 29th, 9am-4pm, at UNC-Asheville and nearby creek.

For info or RSVP, contact Gracia O'Neill at (828) 713-4352 or graciaoneill@yahoo.com $10-20 Donation requested (material costs). RSVP required.

All of the data collected by volunteer groups is shared with NC DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) to be used as a "red flag" for identifying waterways in need of additional protection.
