TRIBUTE Honoring Legendary Ballet Dancers, Dame Sonia Arova and Oleg Briansky
Feb. 12th at 7:00pm, Diana Wortham Theatre
This opening event is a special alliance between UNCA's Arts and Ideas Program and the Asheville Ballet Associate Artistic Director, Lyle Laney. It will include excerpts from the ballets Swan Lake and Coppelia, performed by principal dancers of Asheville Ballet, Allysa Belcher and Meredith McCook.
Presentations will be given by the guests of honor: Oleg Briansky, legendary dancer, choreographer and ballet teacher; from Moscow, Natalia Kolodzei will represent the Russian Academy of Arts; Ann Dunn, Artistic Director of the Asheville Ballet; Therese Laeger, Artistic Director of the Arova Contemporary Ballet Company in Birmingham, Alabama and Igor Roussanoff, the curator of this exhibit.
Two award-winning documentaries will also be on view. Happy to Be So by Yelena Demikovsky about the life of Oleg Briansky and his wife Mireille Briane. The second short film, entitled Arova, created by director Colleen Laeger depicts the life and work of prima ballerina Dame Sonia Arova.
The Tribute presentation at the Diana Wortham Theatre is both free and open to the public.
