Symposium: "Change and Tradition: Exploiting Western North Carolina"

This symposium begins with the keynote address by Ronald Eller, professor of History at the University of Kentucky, who has spent more than 40 years studying Appalachia. Eller’s talk, “Changes in Industry, Labor and Environment in Western North Carolina,” is free and open to the public, at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in the Reuter Center, home of OLLI at UNC Asheville, formerly N.C. Center for Creative Retirement. The symposium continues at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, with four lectures on tourism, deforestation, the history of the railroad, and the federal presence in the region. The Saturday lectures, and a 5 p.m. cocktail reception, take place at Smith McDowell House in Asheville. Symposium is co-sponsored by WNC Historical Association and OLLI.
