Redistricting: Constitutional Obligation in a Digital Age

In the words of Dr. George Peery, speaker: "The new redistricting map of North Carolina has spawned shocked incredulity, smug sentiments of justifiable payback, outrage, support, and baffled indifference." At this meeting, Peery will review the Constitutional, historical, and legal trajectories of legislative redistricting and highlight a number of details in the recently approved Dickson-Rushco proposal for Congressional, State House, and State Senate districts in the Tar Heel state. Attention to the basic claims of court challenges against this plan, some speculation as to what the consequences of these new boundaries likely will produce, and discussion of alternative ways accomplishing this decennial task, will also be considered. The meeting is free and the public is invited. Peery is emeritus professor of political science at Mars Hill College, and current president of the World Affairs Council of Western North Carolina.
