The
annual Bluff Mountain Festival is sponsored by and is a benefit
for the Madison County Arts Council. 1999 was the first year the festival was
sponsored by the arts council ( MCAC ). This move was suggested by the Bluff Mountain
Coalition, the group that sponsored and produced the first three festivals to
raise money to protect Bluff Mountain.
In 1999, Rodney Sutton, active with both groups and, chief organizer
of the festival explained, "With the wonderful support of lots of
people, we've been able to raise enough money for the Bluff Mountain Defense
Fund to go a good ways towards our long-term goal of re-zoning the mountain
to protect its beauty. Now we want to make sure the festival
continues. It's become a great local institution - a free family oriented
festival featuring high quality musical talent. I know the arts council will
make a great home for this fun musical event."
Mary
Kelly of the Bluff Mountain Coalition, another of the festival's organizers added, "We see this as a great way to keep Bluff
Mountain in the public spotlight for years to come. We are delighted that the Madison County Arts Council wants to
keep this festival going and make it an annual showcase - for the music, our mountain arts and crafts and,
for Bluff Mountain."
Now in it's 15th year, the Bluff Mountain Festival has grown to become a favorite Western North Carolina family festival -- celebrating the spirit of these hills with Traditional, Oldtime and Bluegrass music and Arts and Crafts from the best of the region's musicians, artists and craftspersons!
