Buncombe County Scholastic Chess Program Homepage

Chess builds strong intellects. Recently U.S. educators have recognized that chess improves cognitive abilities, rational thinking and reasoning in addition to improving test scores. Chess helps children learn, including children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and other learning disabilities.

Chess brings out latent abilities not reached by traditional educational means.

Rather than create future grandmasters, our goal is to develop all young minds. We want everyone playing chess, not just a few elite kids. You can make a difference and have fun once a week or even once a month by helping with a school chess program. We are particularly interested in starting new programs at the second, third and fourth grade levels.
