While living in the city of Asheville, we were afforded "high-speed" internet access via Charter. The speed was adequate and we had good customer service. After moving to Alexander (which is in north Buncombe county), we were given one option - satellite thru Hughes. It was horribly expensive and barely worked. Eventually, ATT offered us DSL which is not as pricey, but still barely works. It takes 8 ours to download a movie, if you run more than 1 device at a time, the service freezes. We ran an on-line retail business from our home for several years with great difficulty. If true high-speed was offered, we would do it again. One of the most frustrating aspects of this is that Charter service ends less than 1 mile from our home. We were told it was not cost effective for them to run service down our dead end, 2 mile long road since there are not enough homes (at least 15).
