M@IN - Accessing Spatial Data Tutorial
NCGDC - What is its Structure?
The North Carolina Geographic Data Clearinghouse (NCGDC) is a set of Internet
pages and connections which allows a user to search for data across many
sites, using one interface.
- The NCGDC connects agencies. Although the NCGDC resides on the server
at the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information & Analysis,
any agency or organization in North Carolina can participate and list their
data on the NCGDC.
- Although the NCGDC connects agencies, the focus is on geographic data,
not the agency. The NCGDC is a connection of data listings.
- The NCGDC serves metadata, or information about the data, rather than
the data itself. The NCGDC enables users to find out about available data,
determine if the data are applicable for their use, and find out how to
obtain the data.
In the future, users may be able to download the actual spatial data
through the NCGDC. At this time, technical and policy barriers preclude
the widespread use of the Internet to distribute spatial data.
Now we'll look at the functionality of the NCGDC.
