Driving Directions to Race
THE COURSE
The 27th running of the Bele Chere 5K will have a completely new
course for 2006 due to the construction at City/County Plaza. McCormick Field
will be the setting of the Start/Finish line and the post-race celebration.
The 2006 course is a blend of the old with the new.
Starting at McCormick Field for the first time, the course will stay south of
Patton Avenue for the first half of the race (following some of the roads of
the original race in 1979). We have brought back the traditional climb up
Patton Avenue to Pack Square that veterans of this race will remember vividly.
Racers will once again run through the middle of the Bele Chere festival before
heading downhill for the finish adjacent to the stadium.
Following the race, runners will be invited up to
the stadium for post-race refreshments - courtesy of Mellow Mushroom, Citi Stop
and PowerAde - the finish of the Asheville Tourists Fun Run and the awards
ceremony. Award winners will see their name shown on the new stadium matrix
board so bring your family, friends and camera.
NORTH CAROLINA USATF 5K STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Bele Chere 5K has been selected as the site of this year’s 5K
state championship. Only USATF members who are residents of North Carolina are
eligible to compete for the state championships and prize money. In addition to
state championship medals, prize money will be awarded as follows:
Men & Women Open
1st Place $250
2nd Place $100
3rd Place $ 50
Masters Men & Women
1st Place $100
2nd Place $50
THE ASHEVILLE TOURISTS FUN RUN
The Fun Run (approx. 1 mile) will start at 9:00 a.m.
inside Memorial Stadium and finish on the baseball field at McCormick Field.
The first 100 Fun Run registrants will receive a special Fun Run T-shirt and
all runners will receive a finishers ribbon.
OFFICIAL TIMING
The Bele Chere 5K uses chip timing. Runners who do not return chips
will be charged $30.
COST
$20 for entries received on or before July 22. $25 for entries
received after July 22 and on the day of the race. Asheville Track Club members
receive a $3 discount for the 5K $7 for Fun Run $2 from each 5K entry will be
donated equally to the Asheville Track Club’s shoe program and the Association
for Retarded Citizens.
COMMEMORATIVE T-SHIRT
The official 2006 Bele Chere design will be on the race t-shirt. The
first 1,100 5K registrants are guaranteed to receive a shirt.
PACKET PICK UP/LATE REGISTRATION
The Asheville Track Club and The Asheville Tourists will host a Packet
Pickup Party inside McCormick Field from 5 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28. In
addition to picking up your race information and t-shirt, runners and their
families are invited to look around the stadium, purchase food and drink
(including beer), and enjoy some fun entertainment. After partying at the
stadium, everybody is encouraged to head downtown for the Southeast’s largest
free street festival.
AWARDS
Special commemorative trophies will be awarded to the top three male
and female finishers for Overall, Masters and Grand Masters. Age group medals
for male and female will be award for first, second and third in the following
age groups: 12 & Under, 13-15, 16-18, 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44,
45- 49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, and 70 & Over. No double dipping!

GROUPS
Military units, middle and high school teams, youth camps and youth running
clubs may register for $15 each if 5 or more runners register from a single
organization. Individual entries must be submitted together in a single
envelope to receive the discount.
